SOSU C is one of the largest Basic Health Care Colleges in Denmark offering vocational education and training as well as several other educational activities. 

The college is situated in the capital area in Brøndby, Gladsaxe and Herlev and welcomes a total of about 5000 students a year.  

The college is a self-governing institution financed by the state.  

Education programmes at SOSU C consist of one or two basic courses and a main programme. The student must enter into a training agreement with a company approved by the social partners (a confederation of representatives of employers and employees) in order to accomplish the main programme.

Basic courses
Students who enter the basic course directly from lower secondary education must attend two consecutive basic courses (basic course 1 and 2 - in total 40 weeks), whereas other students start directly at basic course 2.
Basic course 2 is flexible in duration and depends on the individual student’s prior qualifications. Typical length of such a basic course is 20 weeks.

Main programme
After the basic programme the student is admitted to the VET main programme, i.e. the student must enter a training agreement with a company. It is in the main programme that the practical training takes place.

The students alternate between learning in a company that offers practical training and at the college according to the principles of a sandwich-type programme. 

Social - and  health service helper (level 1)
The main programme is flexible in duration and depends on the individual student’s prior qualifications. Typical length of the main programme is 1 year and 2 months.

The work assignments of a social- and health service helper include assisting mostly elderly people in practical and personal tasks and basic hygiene as well as implementing physical activity.

The theoretical teaching includes health studies, social science subjects, pedagogy with psychology, physical activity and practical subjects as well as Danish, English and science subjects. Practical training takes place in the homes of citizens as well as in nursing homes.

The length of the theoretical part of the program is 17 weeks and the length of the vocational part of the program is 38 weeks.

Social - and health service assistant (level 2)
The main programme at level 2 is also flexible in duration and depends on the individual student’s prior qualifications. Typical length of the main programme is 1 year and 8 months.

The work assignments of a social- and health service assistant include care, basic nursing and implementation of physical activity to elderly people as well as ill and disabled people. This takes place at hospitals, mental institutions and in the homes of citizens and nursing homes.

The theoretical teaching includes health and nursing studies, medical subjects, social science subjects, pedagogy with psychology, cultural and physical activity subjects as well as Danish, English, and science subjects. Practical training takes place in somatic and psychiatric hospitals as well as in community care facilities and nursing homes.

The length of the theoretical part of the program is 32 weeks and the length of the vocational part of the program is 45 weeks.

Educator assistant
The main programme is also flexible in duration and depends on the individual student’s prior qualifications. Typical length of the main programme is 2 years and 1,5 months.

The work assignments of an educator assistant include child care as well as care for children and adults with special needs.

The theoretical teaching includes pedagogy, cultural-activity related subjects, health studies, physical education as well as language, communication and psychology and social science. Practical training takes place in kindergartens, crèches, after school recreation and 24-hour care centers and other pedagogical alternatives.

The length of the theoretical part of the program is 47 weeks and the length of the vocational part of the program is 45 weeks.

Approach and additional offers
All education programs are based on problem-centered thematic learning, and pupils spend most of their time working on different projects in groups.

All pupils have a personal education plan, and SOSU C offers individual support to pupils in need of special educational assistance i.e. dyslexia and homework assistance. Furthermore, SOSU C offers psychological counseling and mentor/mentee programs.

Other educational activities
SOSU C provides a range of other educational activities. These include supplementary training and qualifying job-retraining programs for employees in the labour market (AMU courses).

Please notice that for the time being SOSU C does not provide courses and education programs in English.
